"Why should I focus on Arts Integration when the State wants us to focus on the Common Core??" The arts have more to do with the Common Core than what you might think. Basically, the goals of Common Core are to get our students thinking critically, connecting ideas and seeing the "big picture," communicating, collaborating, and thinking and responding creatively. Even though the basic content that you should be teaching has been laid out for you, there is nothing that says you cannot create lessons with arts-laden activities that build all of these 21st century skills. That way you are teaching the Common Core and engaging students in learning 21st century skills.
Arts Integration and the Common Core
One aspect of the Common Core is making meaningful assessments. This Edutopia article talks about just that and includes a handy rubric to look at the next time you are trying to assess your assessments! Because the rubrics encourage student choice and creativity, you can easily include arts-related assessments as part of your lesson activities.
This video illustrates how California is introducing some new curriculum standards that focus on bringing the arts back into the classroom in ways that coincide with the new Common Core.
This blog post talks about excerpts from David J. Ferrero's article, "The Humanities: Why Such a Hard Sell?" in which the author talks about collaboration and use of curriculum maps as key parts of Common Core teaching with the Arts.
This is one of many blog postings on Scholastic's site that talks about Common Core and strategies for building student critical thinking and problem solving skills into lessons. This one in particular relates these skills to the arts content.

This blog post talks about how 21st century skills are present in both Common Core and Arts Content. Many good links to 21st Century Skills and groups on here.
